The Other

March 31, 2018

We all have differences  It can entail physical, mental, emotional, and  spiritual.  Many of us have conditions like Autistm, Blindness, Impaired hearing, Asthma, Alcoholism, etc.  Outer ugliness, as well as beauty can cause a disabled self-concept.  We often cling to labels such as tall, short, fat, skinny, black, white, rich, poor, ugly, beautiful, popular, unpopular.  We try to categorize "different". There are not enough slots to fit people into and it will wear you out trying.  Having too much as well as having too little can do a number on you, in the eyes of others.

Every one of us is "the other".    We may as well accept one another and give grace for every difference.  There is no norm.  It is evident, now, since we as a culture have become so wise psychologically and scientifically, and figured out labels for every part of humanity. Need I say that trying to meet needs through state run programs is minor compared to just accepting people as they are and giving grace?

When I think of outcasts in the human race, the name of Jesus pops into my mind. Jesus was different, just like all of us. He was human. He probably had some physical defects, which is common for all of us.  At the very least, he may have had a hang nail, or laryngitis, or a heart murmur. What if he had dyslexia, acne, or warts?   What if he had had earthly riches instead of being homeless on earth?  If you think about it, everything about him was counter cultural and unacceptable by the general public. His disciples put themselves “out there” too. He understood what it was to be different.

Jesus was no different than any one of us.  He was absolutely and totally human.  The added identity of being God’s son provided characteristics that no one can relate to.  He was ostracized and kicked around. He ultimately died a criminal's death because of our mindsets and differences.   As a result, he understands those who are different, disabled and under-privileged.  He understands the rich, and beautiful.  He understands every one of us, not just because he experienced being human but because he was God.

Is there understanding for anybody, anywhere?   The power to love is in God.

Jesus is the other.  because he was totally different than us even tho he is us.  Each of us is "the other".  because we are all different from one another.  If Jesus is "the other" and we are also "the other", then we are in the likeness of Jesus.  If we can accept one another like Jesus accepts us, we are being like Jesus.    Let us love one another.

1Who has believed our message

and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

2He grew up before him like a tender shoot,

and like a root out of dry ground.

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,

nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

3He was despised and rejected by mankind,

a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.

Like one from whom people hide their faces

he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

4Surely he took up our pain

Isaiah 53
