I pictured Jesus sitting beside me on the bus. All along, I had thought of this trip as a date with Jesus. I watched for his love letters along the way. The bus was big enough so that many of us had a wide seat to ourselves and a window. As I watched the passing scenery, I saw everything from sandy deserts to swaying palms and olive trees, I thanked him over and over for escorting me there. I felt protected and cared for. He had provided a group of people and we all watched over each other. We worshiped together, singing and reading scripture.
He had gone before me to make sure that each day brought the experiences that would help me grow to know him better. He wanted me to see where he grew up and ran around, his mother Mary's house in Nazarath, the boat and the sea that transported him from Tiberius to places like Capernaum, and Mt. Tabor where he was transfigured, Bethsaida, where he performed many miracles amongst crowds of people. He wanted me to experience places his predescessors had lived, the people who will always be a part of our heritage and deeply valued, people like Abraham and David. I got to see ruins from the 10th century BC that had been excavated in only the last 100 years.
He made a beautiful gesture in my time staying in Jerusalem. The hotel had run out of tourist rooms and my roommate and I had to take the presidential suite. Surprise! There were fresh flowers and chocolates. At first, I didn't think I deserved that, but I realized it was for a special reason. Attached to that room was a big private balcony on the top floor open to the sky on the top of the hotel. There was a webbed chaise lounge that was available and open for me to sleep on. I put the fresh flowers by my pillow and spent 3 nights sleeping under the Jerusalem sky with the stars with the scent of flowers...just Jesus and me. The breezes brushed through my hair and occasionally caressed my cheeks all night long. My roommate, Amanda, loved it too because she was blessed with what she wanted... a big fluffy bed inside where there was air conditioning. She had time with Jesus too.
Toward the end of our 10 day date, he went with me to the place where he was crucified and the tomb. It was the worst time in his life. My own sufferings pale in comparison. We talked about it together. He comforted me. I am happy now, that he is with the Father and with me in Spirit. He has given me the imagination to picture him walking with me as my personal friend and tour guide. I am in awe that comeraderie like this can even happen. He never leaves my side.
3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
5 You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
