Quantification

June 21, 2018

Old?  Do we know what old is?  Not in America, unless we look at the bones from the Indians a few hundred years ago. In the past, I have a few arrow heads have caused me to think and wonder.

Israel enlarged my vision.  I saw, in living color the remnants of centuries.  I walked on stones that were thousands of years old.  I saw the remains of a 2000 year old Galilean boat.   My world was rocked.  Do you want to go back further?  According to scientists, our earth is  millions of years old.  They have tried to calculate the cooling time for molten lava and many other things.

All that is registered in the Bible is 7 or 8 thousand years.  Ultimately, I believe time is relative.  We can try to quantify years and minutes, but it is mere calculations.  No one can know how the earth was created.  According to Genesis, it was with a few words from the mouth of God, and then he said over and over “It is good.”

We can keep on asking God to give understanding as we need it. One thing I say to God quite often is  “I don’t get it.”

Being present in Israel gave me a  bigger picture of what I don’t understand.  And that is OK.  I am deeply humbled by the wisdom and plan of God.  Battles, temples, forts, beautiful landscapes, and cemeteries are all a part of something bigger.  Today, this day, has been put into context, and I have hope.    In today’s world, there is oppression, wars, hatred, and a deterioration of morals.  The whole world is in pain   Above and beyond, the kingdom of God is in our midst.  And there is still love.  I know it.  It is something that is beyond what we see in the layers of earth and the clouds of destruction.  It is God in his people.  This is a kingdom that can’t be measured.

Quantification of years?  Who knows.  Peter, Jesus disciple describes God’s timetable:

II Peter 3:8  But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,” says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word” (Isaiah 66:1–2).

Now this is humbling.  I choose to believe the God of the Universe!
