I was painting with my Wednesday group of art buddies. I was challenged to paint something subtle, something more monochromatic with similar tones. Now that was hard. It took me two hours to figure out the colors without going toward vibrant. I had an hour left and Carol, my mentor, suggested I draw the sunflowers that were in a vase with a spotlight directed toward them.
"Go wild," she encouraged.
I dived in with no planning. In 30 minutes, I had it conquered. I made the vase purple instead of green. I added the "hot pink" that I didn't see with the sunshine yellow, and threw in a complimentary turquoise that was not strongly evident in reality. It felt so good to use my brightest colors.
I drove home feeling accomplished. I may frame the sunflowers. They make me happy.
