You Said What?

March 22, 2020

I talked to my sister yesterday. She had watched me go through shock, frustration, transition, and confusion in my confinement.  My sister sent me a verse in John 16:33. ”I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble, but take heart!  I have overcome the world.”

My question to Jesus was  "You said what?  What did you tell the disciples?  I'm all ears."

I read all of chapter 16.   Jesus had been with the disciples constantly.   It was time to inform them that he was being taken away.  He had a purpose to fulfill – to kill sin and death and make a way for mankind to be brought into unity with His Father.   His disciples didn’t get it.  He told them that they would weep and mourn, but that there would be joy.  He told them they could ask and receive.

He told them that they would be scattered (vs. 32) to their own homes. At first, probably alone and scared.  He said they wouldn’t understand at that point.  Jesus would be totally alone, but had  his Father God  with him as he went through the worst pain imaginable.

He told them these things ahead of time so that they could have peace.  He said that they would never be alone again because his Holy Spirit would live in them and guide them.

I have struggled with not understanding.  I can only understand what God shows me through his Holy Spirit.  That means I must read his words and listen.  I have struggled with fear of the future.  God has told us ahead of time that we would go through tough times. He also told us way ahead of time, even in Old Testament times, that he has it all.   He is also patient with me in my immaturity.   He personally takes me by the hand in my weak times and doesn’t judge me.

He has forecast a life of victory.

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They WILL soar on wings like eagles.  They shall run and not be weary.  They will walk and not be faint.”  Isaiah 40:31

I can’t open the Bible without hearing these promises over and over in stories and promises!  Do I truly believe?  Can I be bold enough to pray and expect answers?
