From a Tree

"What's this for?" asks the kindly tree. "Somebody forced this on my branches, and the wind won't even blow it away."

The tree continues his discourse.

"Is this one of those things I see human beings wearing to cover up their smiles? I have no need for this. I am content with all my provisions My roots are in rich soil populated by earthworms, bacteria, fungi, algae, mites, nematodes. My newly opening leaves receive sunlight that that manufactures sugars and starches that gives me food.

My days are spent reaching and growing and enjoying all that is around me. I relate to other trees, listen to the varied bird songs, and feel ants crawling up and down under my bark.

Trials come and go. I experience the drama of weather change. Sometimes my upper branches get broken and torn and I lose leaves. Deer often break my lower branches. I guess it is a natural part of life. Kids come and break off branches for sword fights and bows and arrows. I am happy to provide that for them. I have plenty. More branches grow back, stronger than ever. I have heard that people cut branches on apple trees, so the tree can produce more apples. Sounds like a good thing.

Sometimes fungi threaten me with disease. Some trees overcome it. Others die out and eventually become ground homes for chipmunks and gophers. They add to the richness of the soil, as they sink into other forms. That is nature.

In the richness of the soil, my seeds drop and multiply. It is a joy to those who enjoy natural forests.

I don't worry about anything. I send waves of appreciation into the sky. I sense down deep that I am taken care of. If I had the capacity to make choices and had soul turmoil, I might tend toward worry.

Human beings have that capacity, but they also have the capacity to hope. I, along with all of creation, am a picture of hope. I continue on. When there are branch breaks, and storms, and disease, my nature is to come back stronger."

Blessings on all. The Kindly Tree

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." James 1:2-4 The Bible
