"Is Trump a godly man?" My friend asked me across our lunch table. My other friend, sitting at my side had been reviewing the book written about Donald's childhood by his sister.
"Politics aside, " I pondered, "I don't know. Perhaps. What does godly mean? What's the key?"
"Are YOU godly?" I asked. "Am I godly?"
I looked up the meaning on Google. Here is my finding. A godly person is someone who is deeply religious and shows obedience to the rules of their religion.
Now THAT doesn't fit me. I really don't like religious obedience and I avoid rules. I looked at the synonyms. Holy, righteous. I don't follow a bunch of rules. I follow Jesus, and look for his guidance daily. Following the 10 commandments, reading devotions every morning never fail, and following whatever rule seems righteous, is beyond me.
According to what I read in the Bible, the 10 commandments were given as a guideline to show us how far we fall short of perfection. God wants his creation to cry out to him in desperation for an answer, for the key. Yikes , no one can go through life without lying, stealing, or coveting. This crying out to God is what I have done. Recognizing that he gave his son as a sacrifice for all that garbage that we do...the propensity for all to do wrong. In a nutshell, God has made me holy and righteous. So godly? Yes. Not by the definition on Google but because I recognize that there is no effort on my own, no religious practice that brings me godliness. My obedience to rules can be very sketchy. The good news is that I stad righteous and holy in spite of daily human foibles. Any godliness in me is by invitation and willingness. Jesus lives in me.
Donald lives his foibles in front of the camera. (Hmmm I wonder what would have happened if Lincoln or Washington were subjected to this kind of exposure!) Let's welcome him to the human race. Maybe he is too outward and doesn't have self-control, but maybe, just maybe, he has a spot inside of him that God has touched and he is slowly growing in it. God knows. According to his sister, Trump grew up with a painful past, neglected and hurt. The holy relationship between God and man is deeply personal and intimate. In time, there are telltale signs of godliness. Has Trump opened his heart to God? His broadcasted past, and his present unthoughtful tweets don't show much change? Who knows.
He is brutally "out there". I will be brutally out there right now, as I confess that I have a deep understanding of personal ungodly behavior. It is easy to do wrong. I am forgiven and I follow God because I love him and he keeps on growing me in godliness.
I cannot judge. I observe. And pray.
If you want it straight from God's mouth, read Romans 8. Here is the beginning of the chapter.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[b] God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.[c] And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
